Kgosi Galeshewe sentenced to ten years gaol - 1898
Kgosi Galeshewe was an important figure to the local African population. On April 11th 1898 he was sentenced to ten years gaol for his part in the 1896 uprising against the Cape Colony Government.
Kimberley’s original African satellite township, Number 2 Location, was was established in 1871 under British colonial laws to house the area's growing African population. On 26th April 1952 Number 2 Location was renamed Galeshewe, after the baTlhaping chief, Kgosi Galeshewe (Kgosi means Chief).
