Large Diamonds found at Barkly West - Diamond Fields Advertiser - 11 August 1946
"The four main digging centres of the Barkly West mining district each yielded a large stone last week.
At the Sover fissures a diamond weighing 105 carats was found by Mr AJ Esterhuizen, who was the discoverer of the adjoining fissures known as Doornkloof. Mr Esterhuizen, assisted by his two sons and his son in law, is digging on a fairly large scale. On Friday, when one of the buckets of ground was tipped into the ‘bebe’ this large diamond rolled from the top of the bucket. It is reported to be a fine, plump stone of the typical octahedron shape and though not a ‘blue white’ is only faintly tinged with colour. It was sold at the weekly diamond market at Barkly West on Saturday to Mr KN de Kock for £12 000. Other diamonds sold at Barkly West on Saturday included a 52.25 carat found at the Orange River diggings, a 35.5 carat from Molopo at Mafeking, and a fine eight carat stone from the Windsorton district."

President Yasser Arafat arrives in SA - 1998
Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and Palestinian National Authority president, Yasser Arafat, arrived in Cape Town on his first state visit to South Africa at the invitation of President Nelson Mandela. The visit, from 11 to 13 August, marked continuing good relations between the African National Congress and the PLO. SA recognised the State of Palestine on 15 February 1995. Arafat's visit raised controversy among South Africa's Jewish community. Mandela awarded him South Africa's Order of Merit, Excellence Class, for foreign citizens. In exchange, Arafat gave Mandela the Star of Holy Jerusalem. Arafat died on 11 November 2004.
