Saxophone player, Bobby Hendricks, dies in Cape Town - 1999
Robert Stuart Hendricks was born in Caledon on 7 February 1936. He was a renowned South African saxophone player known as the "King of 'Langarm' music" (straight arm music),a dance music without vocals. He was famous for his hit song "Give me hope, Joanna".
Though Hendricks could not read or write music, he started his own band, the Bobby Hendricks Sound. Hendricks died in Cape Town from kidney failure on 7 March 1999. Though he never achieved much fame, his true wealth and recognition was revealed by the number of people who attended his funeral, one of the biggest ever held in Overberg, Western Cape Province.
