14 days since beginning of the Siege of Kimberley, 1899
Extract from "The Diary of a Doctor's Wife – During the Siege of Kimberley October 1899 to February 1900" by Winifred Heberden.
I went over to the Mounted Camp and found things in excellent order. Jack has a Batman and a Hospital Orderly who can dispense. He also has a small Ambulance Corps with waggons, mules, and horses ready to take the field at a moment's notice. The cooking for the Camp is very rough, the men's meat being always stewed or baked in 'billys' (three legged pots), with the vegetables thrown in. Bread, however, is properly baked for them in the town.
Great news in detail of our victories in Natal at Glencoe and Elandslaagte.
