Today in Kimberley's History
September 22nd

The Defiance Campaign started in Kimberley on 16th September 1952 when 12 Africans were arrested after they used the main entrance of the railway station and sat on "whites only" seats. Among those arrested was Dr Arthur Letele the chairman of the No. 2 Location ANC Branch.
A second group were arrested when they entered Kimberley's Market Square without their passes on 22nd September 1952. The DFA newspaper reported that "all were giving the African National Congress salute".
