Getting Around Kimberley by Public Transport/Taxis

Although Kimberley is a compact city and we are conveniently located just 2 km from the city centre, exploring the area without your own transport can sometimes be challenging. Here are the best options available:

Car Rental

Car hire is available at Kimberley Airport (KIM). Please note that rental desks have limited operating hours, which are generally aligned with flight schedules:

• Most providers open from early morning until evening on weekdays.
• Weekend and Sunday hours are more restricted.
• We recommend booking your rental in advance.

Metered Taxis & App-Based Ride-Hailing

• Metered Taxis: Reliable local taxis are available. We recommend Rikkis Taxis – Tel: 083 342 2533 or 082 954 0854.
• App-Based Ride-Hailing: Uber and Bolt operate in Kimberley. Both services are generally available via their smartphone apps, though availability can vary, depending on the time of day.

Minibus (Combi) Hail Taxis

We are very close to Main Road with frequent Minibus (Combi) Taxis.

These are the small white vans (usually 15-seater Toyotas) that operate on fixed routes.

You flag them down (hail them) on the side of the road, just like a bus.

They are the most common and cheapest form of public transport for locals.

You pay the driver or conductor (called a “gaartjie”) in cash when you get on or off.

Important Notes for Guests:

• They are very informal — no meters, no apps, shared with other passengers.
• They can be crowded, loud, and drive quite fast.
• Routes are not always obvious to visitors (you usually ask the driver or other passengers, “Where are you going?”)
• Safety & comfort: Many guesthouses (including us) do not recommend them for tourists, especially if you have luggage or are travelling at night.

Tip: If you don’t have your own vehicle, we strongly suggest arranging airport transfers or taxis in advance, especially if arriving late or departing early.

Directions to the Solomon Edwardian Guest House

• Leave Bloemfontein on the N8 west
• At the outskirts of Kimberley, pass over a railway flyover
• Travel 2km along Oliver Road and turn right into Carrington Way
• Travel 1.4km along Carrington Way to a 4-way junction with traffic lights (Halfway House Hotel in front/left of you)
• Turn right and travel 290m along Main Road
• Turn right into Solomon Street, we are 20m on your right

• Leave Cape Town on the N1 north
• After 590km, turn left at Three Sisters onto the N12 to Kimberley
• After 420km, reach a 4-way junction with traffic lights on the outskirts of Kimberley
• Turn right into McDougall Street at the traffic lights (petrol station on your right)
• Travel 1km along McDougall Street to a T-junction with Oliver Road (N8)
• Turn left onto Oliver Road
• Travel 1km along Oliver Road and turn right into Carrington Way
• Travel 1.4km along Carrington Way to a 4-way junction with traffic lights (Halfway House Hotel in front/left of you)
• Turn right and travel 290m along Main Road
• Turn right into Solomon Street, we are 20m on your right

• Leave Johannesburg on the N12 south-west
• Approaching the outskirts of Kimberley, pass Shell Ultra City on your left and then pass over a railway flyover
• Travel 400m to a 4-way junction with traffic lights, turn left onto Quinn Street.
• Travel 1.4km along Quinn Street to a 4-way junction with traffic lights
• Cross over the junction and travel 1.2km along Du Toitspan Road to a 4-way junction with traffic lights (Halfway House Hotel on your left)
• Travel across the junction and travel 290m along Main Road
• Turn right into Solomon Street, we are 20m on your right

• Leave Kuruman on the R31 south towards Danielskuil
• After Danielskuil, turn left on the R31 towards Kimberley
• At the outskirts of Kimberley, you will come to a 4-way traffic circle which crosses the N8
• Turn left at the travel circle and continue 6.5km to a 4-way junction with traffic lights
• Turn right at the junction and travel 1.2km along Du Toitspan Road to a 4-way junction with traffic lights (Halfway House Hotel on your left)
• Pass across the junction and travel 290m along Main Road
• Turn right into Solomon Street, we are 20m on your right

• Leave Upington on the N10 east to Groblershoop (115km)
• At Groblershoop, turn left/east on the N8 to Kimberley (290km)
• At the outskirts of Kimberley, you will come to a 4-way traffic circle which crosses the R31
• Pass over the travel circle and continue 6.5km to a 4-way junction with traffic lights
• Turn right at the junction and travel 1.2km along Du Toitspan Road to a 4-way junction with traffic lights (Halfway House Hotel on your left)
• Pass across the junction and travel 290m along Main Road
• Turn right into Solomon Street, we are 20m on your right
