Today in Kimberley's History
July 27th
"Every day has a story about Kimberley's past."
On this day...
The twenty-seventh of July reflects Kimberley's resilience, sacrifice and achievement. On this day, the city's magnificent Town Hall survived a potentially devastating fire, a Kimberley family mourned the loss of a son on the battlefields of France, and one of the city's greatest athletes made Olympic history. Together, these stories remind us that Kimberley's influence has extended far beyond its diamond mines.
1902 – Fire Threatens Kimberley Town Hall
Only a few months after the end of the South African War, disaster struck one of Kimberley's finest public buildings.
On 27 July 1902, a fire broke out in the Kimberley Town Hall, one of the city's most impressive examples of Victorian civic architecture. Fortunately, the blaze was discovered before it could engulf the entire building, and firefighters quickly brought it under control. Although some damage occurred, the Town Hall was saved.
Completed in 1899, the Town Hall had already become a symbol of Kimberley's confidence and prosperity. Its distinctive clock tower and elegant façade remain among the city's best-known landmarks today, continuing to host civic events and public gatherings more than a century later. The survival of the building ensured that future generations could enjoy one of Kimberley's architectural treasures.

1916 – A Kimberley Soldier Falls in France
The First World War touched families across Kimberley.
On 27 July 1916, news reached Kimberley that Edgar Oliver, son of H. A. Oliver, had been killed while serving with Allied forces in France during the Battle of the Somme. Like many young South Africans, Edgar had travelled thousands of kilometres from home to fight in one of history's deadliest conflicts.
His death was one of many losses experienced by Kimberley families during the Great War. The names of local men who never returned are commemorated on memorials throughout the city, reminding us of Kimberley's contribution to a conflict fought far from its streets.

On this day in 1952, Kimberley celebrated one of its greatest sporting achievements.
Competing at the Helsinki Olympic Games, Esther Brand won the women's high jump, becoming the first South African woman to win an Olympic gold medal in athletics. At Helsinki, she cleared 1.67 metres, equalling the Olympic record to secure the gold medal and write her name into sporting history.
Her remarkable achievement inspired generations of South African athletes and established Kimberley as the home of one of the country's greatest Olympians. Although athletics has changed dramatically since 1952, Esther Brand's victory remains one of the proudest moments in Kimberley's sporting history. Today, she is remembered not only for winning an Olympic title but for demonstrating that determination, talent and hard work could take a young athlete from Kimberley to the very top of world sport.
