Today in Kimberley's History
March 4th

"Every day has a story about Kimberley's past."

On this day...

4 March reminds us that Kimberley has often stood at the crossroads of South Africa's struggle for justice and democracy. While today's story begins in a courtroom far from the Diamond City, it also reflects the close connections between national leaders and Kimberley figures such as Robert Sobukwe, whose ideas and leadership helped shape the country's future.

1963 – Walter Sisulu Convicted During the Apartheid Struggle

On 4 March 1963, Walter Sisulu, Secretary-General of the African National Congress, was convicted of inciting African workers to participate in a nationwide stay-at-home protest against the establishment of the Republic of South Africa. He was sentenced to six years' imprisonment but was released on bail while awaiting the outcome of further legal proceedings.

The conviction formed part of the apartheid government's growing campaign to silence the country's leading political activists. Within months, Sisulu would be arrested again during the famous Rivonia Raid, leading to the Rivonia Trial and a sentence of life imprisonment alongside Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki, Ahmed Kathrada and other leaders of the liberation movement.

Although the trial took place elsewhere, Sisulu's story has important connections to Kimberley. He was a contemporary and colleague of Robert Sobukwe, who practised law in Kimberley during the early 1960s after being released from imprisonment and banished to the city under restrictive government orders. Both men played pivotal roles in opposing apartheid, even though they followed different political paths.

Today, visitors to Kimberley can still reflect on that history by visiting Robert Sobukwe's law offices in Galeshewe, now home to community organisations, and Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital, which honours one of the city's most respected political figures.

Did You Know?

Robert Sobukwe spent the final years of his life in Kimberley, where he practised law despite severe government restrictions. Today his name lives on through Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital and several heritage sites across the city.
