On this day...

On 14 March 1878, one of South Africa's greatest geologists, Dr Alexander Logie du Toit, was born in Cape Town. His pioneering research into the geology of the Karoo and the Kimberley Diamond Fields helped shape modern geological science and deepened the world's understanding of how diamonds reached the Earth's surface.

1878 – Alexander Logie du Toit is Born

On 14 March 1878, Dr Alexander Logie du Toit was born in Cape Town. He would become one of South Africa's most influential geologists and an internationally respected authority on the country's geology. After studying mining engineering and geology, du Toit joined the Geological Commission of the Cape Colony, then worked for De Beers Consolidated Mines. His work brought him into close contact with the geology of Kimberley and the famous diamond mines that had transformed the city.


Du Toit conducted extensive geological investigations of the Kimberley kimberlite pipes, helping to improve scientific understanding of the volcanic formations that transported diamonds from deep within the Earth's mantle to the surface. His work also contributed to more effective diamond exploration across southern Africa. Beyond Kimberley, he became renowned for his studies of the Karoo Supergroup and the extensive dolerite intrusions that characterise much of South Africa's interior. His detailed geological mapping remains highly regarded today.


Internationally, du Toit is best remembered for championing Alfred Wegener's theory of continental drift at a time when many scientists rejected it. After comparing the geology of South America and southern Africa, he concluded that the continents had once been joined. His influential 1937 book, Our Wandering Continents, presented compelling geological evidence that eventually helped lay the foundations for the modern theory of plate tectonics.

Although many of his ideas were controversial during his lifetime, later scientific discoveries confirmed much of his work. Today, Alexander du Toit is recognised as one of the pioneers of modern geology, whose research not only advanced science but also helped explain the geological history of the Diamond City.
