7 March marks the arrival of a man whose life became closely intertwined with Kimberley's rise to prominence. When Dr Leander Starr Jameson arrived in the Diamond City in 1878, he came as a young doctor seeking opportunity. Within a few years, he had become a trusted physician, close associate of Cecil Rhodes and one of the most influential—and controversial—figures in southern African history.
1878 – Dr Leander Starr Jameson Arrives in Kimberley
On 7 March 1878, Dr Leander Starr Jameson arrived in Kimberley to establish a medical practice in the rapidly growing Diamond City. Born in Scotland in 1853, Jameson qualified as a doctor before travelling to South Africa in search of a warmer climate to improve his health. Kimberley, then at the centre of the world's greatest diamond rush, offered both professional opportunity and adventure.
Jameson quickly earned a reputation as a skilled and compassionate physician. His patients included miners, businessmen and ordinary families living in the bustling town that had grown almost overnight around the diamond mines. His popularity and ability soon brought him into contact with Kimberley's leading businessmen, including Cecil John Rhodes. The friendship between Jameson and Rhodes would profoundly influence the history of southern Africa. Jameson became one of Rhodes' closest advisers and later managed many of his business and political affairs. Together, they helped shape the expansion of British influence north of the Limpopo River through the British South Africa Company.
Jameson's later career would be marked by both achievement and controversy. As Administrator of Mashonaland and later Prime Minister of the Cape Colony, he played a significant role in the politics of southern Africa. However, he is perhaps best remembered for leading the ill-fated Jameson Raid of 1895–1896, an event that heightened tensions between Britain and the South African Republic and helped pave the way for the South African War. Despite his later political career, Jameson's South African story began not in Johannesburg or Rhodesia, but in Kimberley, where he first gained the confidence of Cecil Rhodes and established the relationships that would shape the rest of his life.
